.DST
The DST format is the industry standard for commercial embroidery machines. However, it has a major limitation: it does not store colour information. When you receive a DST file, your machine will run in a single sequence starting with the first colour. We always provide a detailed PDF colour worksheet with every DST file so you know exactly which thread to load at each stop.
Requires PDF color worksheet
.PES
The PES format is the preferred choice for home embroidery machines, especially Brother and Baby Lock. Unlike DST, PES stores thread colour information, making it easier to follow. We always preserve thread colour mapping to make it easier for the operator to follow. If you are unsure of your machine's format, check the owner's manual or use our interactive tool above.
Full color information saved
.JEF
Janome machines use the JEF format, which supports full colour palettes and offers detailed stitch information. Many Janome machines use the JEF+ version. Always check your machine supports the file format. If you are unsure of your machine's format, check the owner's manual or use our interactive tool above.
Color information preserved
.XXX
Singer machines typically use the XXX format, which becomes increasingly less common as newer machines accept DST or PES. Many newer Singer machines prefer VP3 or PES formats. No matter your machine's format, our expert digitizers will verify every file and stitch sequence. Our digitizers verify every format for your machine.
Requires separate color file
Sending the wrong file format to your embroidery machine is one of the most common and frustrating mistakes. If your machine cannot read the file, it either throws an error or reads it incorrectly, meaning your machine might try to read it in a different sequence, starting from the first colour it encounters. At Sassy Digitizing, we manually convert every design to the exact format your specific machine requires, ensuring a seamless embroidery run.

The PES format is preferred for home embroidery machines, especially Brother and Baby Lock. Unlike DST, PES files store thread colour information. We preserve colour mapping to make operation easier. PES files are version-specific, so always confirm your machine model when ordering.
The JEF format is used by Janome machines and supports full colour palettes and stitch data. Newer models may require JEF+. Always check your machine manual or use our selector tool to confirm compatibility before ordering.
The XXX format is used in Singer machines. Some newer models also support DST or PES. Regardless of format, every file is manually verified by our digitizers to ensure correct stitch sequencing and machine compatibility before delivery.

Many Brother commercial machines accept DST files as well as PES. However, DST files do not contain colour information, so colours must be set manually at the machine. For the best experience on a Brother machine, request PES format when ordering from Sassy Digitizing.
Brother and Babylock embroidery machines use the PES format. PES is version-specific: older Brother machines may require PES 6 while newer models accept PES 10. Always tell us your machine model and we match the correct PES version.
Husqvarna Viking and Pfaff embroidery machines use the VP3 format. Older Husqvarna models use the HUS or VIP format. Tell us your machine model and we deliver the correct format.
Janome embroidery machines use the JEF format. Newer Janome models may also use JEF+ format. Specify your exact model when ordering and we deliver the correct version.
Tajima commercial embroidery machines use the DST (Data Stitch Tajima) format. DST is also the most universally accepted commercial embroidery format and works on Barudan, ZSK, Happy, Sunstar and most other multi-head commercial systems.
DST stands for Data Stitch Tajima. It is the most widely supported commercial embroidery file format in the world. DST files contain stitch-by-stitch X and Y coordinate data, colour stop commands and machine control codes. They do not store thread colour information: colours are set manually at the machine by the operator.
PES is the native embroidery format for Brother and Babylock machines. Unlike DST, PES files store thread colour information and design preview thumbnails. PES files are version-specific and must match the version supported by your specific machine model.
EMB is the native Wilcom project file format. It is not a machine-ready output file but a fully editable source file that stores all stitch data, colour information and design objects. Sassy Digitizing builds all files in Wilcom V9 and E2 and can provide the EMB source file on request, allowing future edits without re-digitizing from scratch.
