Standard Embroidery Size Guide

Getting the sizing right before you digitize is critical. If a design is too large, it sits awkwardly on the fabric and causes puckering. If cap text is too small, the needles will create messy thread clumps and fabric damage. At Sassy Digitizing, our 100% manual digitizing process takes every placement and measurement into account, ensuring a flawless stitch every time.

Why Standard Embroidery Sizes Matter

Getting the sizing right before you digitize is critical. If a design is too large, it sits awkwardly on the fabric and causes puckering. If cap text is too small, needles create messy thread clumps and fabric damage. At Sassy Digitizing, our 100% manual digitizing process takes every placement and measurement into account, ensuring a flawless stitch every time.

Cap & Hat Digitizing Sizes

The golden rule for standard low-profile caps is keeping the height under 2.25 inches. For structured, high-profile hats, you can push it to 2.5 inches. Because caps are curved, we always manually map your files to stitch from the center out, preventing the fabric from pushing and distorting your logo.

Standard low-profile caps: Max height 2.25 inches
Structured high-profile hats: Max height 2.5 inches
Cap sides: Max width 2.5 inches
Manual center-out stitching prevents distortion

Left Chest Digitizing Sizes

The industry standard for a left chest corporate logo is between 3.5 and 4 inches wide. We carefully adjust the stitch density and underlay based on whether you are stitching on a stretchy polo shirt or a stiff canvas work shirt.

Corporate logos: 3.5 to 4 inches wide
Sleeve logos: Max height 2 inches
Adjust density based on fabric type
Perfect for polos, dress shirts, and workwear

Jacket Back Digitizing Sizes

Standard jacket backs usually range from 10 to 12 inches wide. Massive designs require precise, manual digitizing to manage the sheer volume of stitches without causing the garment to pucker. For large jacket back designs, we recommend using appliqué techniques to reduce stitch count.

Standard size: 10 to 12 inches wide
Large designs: 50,000 to 100,000+ stitches
Appliqué recommended for large areas
Precision manual digitizing required

Small Lettering & Detailed Logos

One of the most common mistakes is trying to stitch text that is too small. For standard block fonts, we recommend a minimum height of 0.25 inches (6-7mm). For script or serif fonts, increase that to 0.3 inches. Our manual digitizers will warn you if your design contains details that are too small.

Block fonts: Minimum 0.25 inches (6-7mm)
Script/Serif fonts: Minimum 0.3 inches
Smaller text risks thread breaks
Manual verification before digitizing

Pro Tip: Always Test Your Size First

Before committing to a large production run, we recommend ordering a sample sew-out on your actual garment fabric. This ensures the size, placement and density are perfect for your specific application.

📏 Measuring Tips

  • Use a flexible tape measure for curved surfaces.
  • Measure width at the widest point of the design area.
  • Consider the garment's shrink factor when sizing.
  • Always leave at least 0.5 inches margin from edges.

🎯 Placement Guidelines

  • Left Chest: 4 inches below shoulder seam, 3 inches from centre front.
  • Cap Front: Centre the design on the front panel, staying clear of seam lines.
  • Jacket Back: Centre horizontally, 2 inches below collar.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about our embroidery digitizing service, pricing, file formats, turnaround times and revision policy.

Size affects stitch count, which affects cost for designs outside the flat-rate range. Cap and left chest logos at standard sizes qualify for the $15 flat rate regardless of stitch count. Jacket backs and larger designs are priced at $1 per 1,000 stitches. Use our stitch count calculator to estimate your stitch count from your design dimensions.

The minimum recommended embroidery text height is 4 to 5mm for standard applications. At Sassy Digitizing, our expert digitizers can manually digitize text as small as 3mm using correct column widths and density settings in Wilcom V9 and E2. Text below 3mm cannot be reliably embroidered.

A standard structured cap front logo is 2.25 to 2.5 inches tall by 4 inches wide maximum. For low-profile and unstructured caps, the design area is smaller at 1.75 to 2.25 inches tall by 3.5 inches wide. Stay inside the seam lines on both sides of the front panel.

Standard jacket back designs range from 10 to 12 inches wide. Full back designs can be up to 12 inches wide by 10 inches tall. The top of the design should sit approximately 2 inches below the collar. Yoke-only designs are typically 10 inches wide by 4 inches tall.

The industry standard for left chest embroidery is 3.5 to 4 inches wide. On polo shirts, 3.5 inches is most common. On jackets and sweatshirts, 4 inches works well. Place the design 4 inches from the shoulder seam and 3 inches from the centre front.
